Ludo is the modern commercial version of Pachisi, one of the oldest board games in existence. Pachisi was played by Indian royalty as far back as the 6th century, using a cloth board and cowrie shells as dice. The British adapted it into the game Ludo, which was patented in 1896 and went on to become a global family favorite. The game combines luck from dice rolls with genuine strategic choices about which token to move, when to play aggressively, and when to play defensively.
Good Ludo strategy revolves around three principles: spread, capture, and safe zones. Spreading your tokens across the board rather than advancing one token at a time gives you more options each turn — you can move whichever token best fits the dice roll. Capturing opponent pieces sends them back to their base, wasting their progress and buying you time. The star-shaped safe zones protect any token sitting on them from capture, so learning where these are and using them strategically is essential. Rolling a 6 is critical: it brings a new token into play and grants an extra roll. But rolling three 6s in a row forfeits your turn entirely.
Ludo's global popularity is remarkable. The game is known under different names across the world — Uckers in the British Royal Navy, Petits Chevaux in France, and Mensch ärgere Dich nicht in Germany (where it is considered a national pastime). Competitive Ludo has also grown in recent years, with organized tournaments in India and Southeast Asia attracting thousands of players. The game's enduring appeal lies in its balance: luck determines the dice, but skill determines how you respond. A bad roll can be overcome with smart token placement, and a series of good rolls can be wasted by careless positioning.
Our version supports 2-player and 4-player modes. In both modes, you play as Green and the other colors are AI opponents. The game manages dice rolls automatically so you can focus on token selection and strategy. Each AI opponent plays with an independent strategy, making the 4-player mode particularly chaotic and engaging — you never know which opponent will surge ahead or fall behind.
Multi-token deployment is the most important strategic choice in Ludo. A common mistake is keeping tokens in base until you roll a 6, then advancing only that one token. The stronger approach is to bring all four tokens into play as quickly as possible, even if they cluster on a few early squares. Three tokens on the board means three chances to use any dice roll productively. Once all tokens are active, focus on spreading them around the track so that you always have a token in a position to capitalize on any dice result. The star-shaped safe zones are your best friends — position one token on each colored star when possible, creating a rotating defense that makes it very difficult for opponents to capture your pieces.
No sign-up or download — just open your browser, choose your player count, and race to get all four tokens home first. If you enjoy family-style board games, you might also like Snakes & Ladders for another classic race-to-the-finish experience.

Ludo is a classic race game for 2-4 players. Each player has 4 tokens that circle the board. Roll a 6 to deploy a token, capture opponents by landing on them, and be first to get all tokens home. The strategic depth comes from multi-token deployment — advancing all four tokens gives you the most options per roll.
