Checkers, also known as American Checkers or English Draughts, is a strategy board game with roots stretching back over 3,000 years. A game board resembling modern checkers was discovered in the ancient Sumerian city of Ur. The game spread across the world and crystallized into its current form in 12th-century France. What makes checkers special is that forced capture rules turn every move into a tactical puzzle — when you must capture, you cannot always choose the best-looking move.
The key to winning at checkers is controlling the center of the board and advancing pieces together rather than pushing single pieces into enemy territory. A common mistake beginners make is advancing one piece too far without support, allowing the opponent to force a capture chain. Building a strong formation — two or three pieces close together — lets you create traps where your opponent is forced to jump into a losing position. Getting pieces crowned as soon as possible is also critical: kings can move backward, dramatically increasing your attack options.
Checkers has a rich competitive history. The first known checkers book was published in 1756 by William Payne, and the first world championship was held in 1840. The game reached its analytical peak in the 20th century when computer scientists began using checkers as a test bed for artificial intelligence. In 2007, researchers at the University of Alberta solved checkers — proving that with perfect play from both sides, the game always ends in a draw. Despite being solved, checkers remains deeply challenging for human players because the solution space is vast: there are roughly 500 billion million possible positions.
Our version includes a unique toggle for forced jumps. With the rule enabled, you play traditional American Checkers where captures are mandatory — the game standard for competitive play. With forced jumps disabled, you can play casual checkers where captures are optional, making it more accessible for younger players or beginners. The AI adapts its strategy to whichever rule set you choose, playing more aggressively when forced captures are on.
Three AI difficulty levels let you progress at your own pace. Easy is forgiving and focuses on basic piece movement and simple captures. Medium provides a solid challenge with tactical awareness — it will spot forced capture chains and block your advances. Impossible uses deep minimax search to evaluate multiple future moves, making it a tough opponent even for experienced checkers players. The AI runs entirely in your browser with no server delays, giving you instant responses on every move.
