Checkers — known as American Checkers or English Draughts — has been played in some form for centuries, with evidence of similar games dating back to ancient Mesopotamia. The modern rules are straightforward: 12 pieces per side on an 8x8 board, diagonal movement only, and mandatory captures. That forced capture rule is the engine that drives all the game's strategic richness. When a capture is available, you must take it, creating chains of jumps that can cascade across the board in ways neither player fully controls.

Against an AI, these forced capture sequences are predictable. The computer calculates the optimal capture path every time, never hesitating and never falling for traps. Against a human, forced captures become tactical puzzles with real emotional stakes. You can sacrifice a piece deliberately to bait your opponent into a capture that leaves their back row exposed, setting up a multi-jump counter-attack on your next turn. You can position your pieces in a fork so that whichever capture your opponent chooses, their position weakens in some meaningful way. These sacrifice-and-counter strategies are the beating heart of competitive Checkers.

Reading your opponent's opening style is one of the most valuable skills in online Checkers. An AI opens with statistically optimal moves every time — there is no pattern to detect and no tendency to exploit. A human player, by contrast, develops habits. Some players favor advancing their center pieces aggressively, aiming for early king promotions. Others prefer keeping their back row intact as long as possible, playing a patient positional game. Some consistently move pieces on a specific side of the board, revealing a dominant hand or a blind spot. Noticing these preferences in the first five moves gives you a significant edge that grows as the game progresses. The forced capture rule amplifies every mistake: one misplaced piece can trigger a chain of mandatory jumps that clears half your board.

Getting pieces crowned as Kings should be your primary strategic goal in any online match. A King moves backward and forward diagonally, doubling your options and dramatically increasing your threat potential. Two Kings working together can dominate the endgame, controlling the center squares and forcing your opponent into losing positions from which there is no escape without losing material. Against an AI, Kings feel like a mathematical advantage — the computer calculates and adjusts. Against a human, Kings create visible pressure. Your opponent starts making rushed decisions, missing blocks and leaving pieces undefended in ways they never would in the opening phase.

Our version includes a toggle for forced jumps, so you can play traditional American Checkers with mandatory captures or casual rules where captures are optional. Create a room, share the link, and play in real-time — no accounts, no downloads, just the board and the other player.
